CAD - Computer Aided Design - Surfacing and Design

  • Our aerodynamicists are proficient in using CAD, which offers the benefit of streamlining the process for making modifications that enhance aerodynamics. 
  • To rapidly iterate geometric options, we create parametric models, drawing upon our experience in carefully constructing CAD models to facilitate seamless feature changes without the need to rebuild or recreate models each time. This approach accelerates project timelines and reduces costs.
  • We place a strong emphasis on maintaining high surface quality in our CAD models to minimize suction pressure peaks and mitigate common sources of flow separation. 
  • When technical regulations apply, we integrate legality checks into our CAD processes to ensure that any modifications comply fully with the regulations.
  • In cases where wind tunnel testing is necessary, we can design scale model parts for manufacture using the surface models of the vehicle. Additionally, in our wind tunnel model designs, we prioritize modularity to enable efficient part changes in the wind tunnel without compromising the quality of the model.

CFD - Computational Fluid Dynamics

  • The use of CFD simulations provide excellent value for money as it allows the determination of aerodynamic forces without the need for physical parts, using a virtual wind tunnel. 
  • The project commences with the establishment of a baseline, followed by running each geometry change separately in CFD to assess improvements in forces and pressure fields.
  • Following each CFD simulation, a detailed analysis of the off-body and on-surface flow fields can be conducted. 
  • Simulations can be solved within a matter of hours, allowing for multiple iterations to be carried out each day.
  • Our choice of CFD software has a proven history of excellent correlation against empirical data. 
  • By leveraging CFD, studies can be repeated reliably and are not influenced by part quality or deflection.

Wind Tunnel

  • At Pro-Aero, we have partnered with industry leading wind tunnels to ensure a perfect match for each project specification.
  • Wind tunnels are equipped with a moving ground and turntable to simulate yaw conditions for comprehensive testing.
  • Full size or scale testing is offered based on client’s requirements. 
  • In addition to load information, a variety of toosl are available to gather flowfield information, namely, Flow Vis, Wool Tufts, Total Pressure Probe scans & PIV 
  • Prior to wind tunnel testing, the model dimensions are meticulously assessed to ensure compliance within acceptable tolerances. 
  • Each run yields a significant amount of data, which is thoroughly analysed during the experiment.
  • We offer the manufacture of scale and test models and parts.

Track Support

  • Analysis of current Wind Tunnel & Track data for optimum race car setup. An in-depth breakdown of the effects of influential aerodynamic surfaces, including cooling systems (engine, gearbox, brakes etc.), for an individual circuit/driver specific aero setup. Typically, an increased efficiency could be achieved for a given drag target.
  • Management and design of engine cooling for atmospheric and track conditions with a view to retaining maximum performance for outings.
  • Investigation of critical bodywork and areas of a racecar to unlock potential for the retention of maximum performance. 
  • Track testing at races & tests for development and setup purposes. This would require the use and development of test specific sensors (if not available).

Race & Data Preparation

  • Creation of a document to catalogue setup options and their effects on downforce, drag, balance, sensitivity and cooing to optimise race part selection. 
  • Along with VGS/simulation data, Aeromaps can be produced (Downforce, Aerobalance, Drag) with mechanical setup options overlaid for conditions such as braking, acceleration and cornering.
